In 1989 the 75,000th book was added to the collection.

The Altona Library launched the Altona Library Australiana Special Collection. The Australiana Special Collection Cabinet was donated by B.F. Goodrich.

World War Two Army Surgeon Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop was a guest speaker at the Altona City Library for Australian Library Week in October 1989.  He was a truly great and inspiring speaker.

Hon. Joan Kirner, MP, Premier of Victoria launched ‘Science Week at the Library’ sponsored by Dow Chemicals (Australia).

Paperback 90’s collection was launched. This was a collection of popular fiction titles in paperback format which were purchased monthly from Angus and Robertson. These were very well used.

In 1989 the project managers and architect are appointed to design the $1.7 million dollar Altona City Library Redevelopment Project.
