In 2003 a disastrous rainstorm led to a flood at Altona Library.  The library was forced to close for two weeks while ruined books were disposed of and carpets replaced.  This was seen as an opportunity to re-configure the layout of the branch.

In the early 2000’s the Council created a public website which hosted a link to the library.  Many aspects of the service were now able to be viewed from customers' homes.
