Altona North Library Update

Altona North Library in Millers RdConstruction of the Altona North Library is well under way. The slab is complete and work continues offsite, where the precast concrete panels and the structural steel are being made in their respective factories. Planning is under way for the delivery of the huge precast panels which will make up the eastern and western walls and construction is on track for a March 2010 opening.


Fees and Charges

Change to charges at Hobsons Bay LibrariesIn line with the adoption of the 2009/2010 Council Budget there will be a number of changes to library fees and charges commencing 1st July. This will include removal of the email charge and an increase in charges for faxes, processing, inter library loans and room/bus hire.


Literary Awards

Orange Prize for Fiction

Two of the world's most prestigious writing prizes have recently been awarded. Marilynne Robinson won the Orange Prize for Fiction for Home and Tim Winton was the recipient of the Miles Franklin Prize for the fourth time for his novel Breath.

Entries are now open for the $60,000 Melbourne Prize for Literature 2009, celebrating excellence amongst Victorian authors.

Madame Brussels: This Modern Pandemonium

Madame Brussels was the owner of Melbourne's First Brothel

Tuesday, 18th August, 7.00pm - 8.00pm, Altona Library

Discover the world of Marvelous Melbourne’s Queen of Harlotry. LM Robinson charts the story of Madame Brussels, keeper of Melbourne’s most famous brothel, through the decadent 1880s and the tumultuous 1890s, through courtroom dramas and love affairs. Lenny Robinson and her publisher Dale Campisi from Arcade Publications will discuss the life and legacy of Madame Brussels.

Red Couch, First Thursday Readers and Daytime Book Groups

Interested in books, literature and talking? Then check out the variety of book groups run by the libraries. First Thursday Readers Group will discuss One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson. Book Group will focus on The Boat by Nam Le and the Red Couch Book Group, which meets in a Cafe will chat about Mao's Last Dancer by Li Cunxin.

African Drumming Performance Featuring Ray Pereira

African Drumming event with Ray Pereira in celebration of Refugee Week

Thursday, 9th July, 11.00am, Altona Meadows Library and Learning Centre

Bring the whole family along to enjoy master drummer Ray Pereira who will perform a selection of rhythms from West Africa. Recognised as one of Australia’s premier percussionists he will be joined by J.K. and Kanch Karunaratne and together they will take you on a journey from Ghana to the Ivory Coast using an array of traditional drums.

Environmnent Resource Centre News

World Environment Day

Environment Resource Centre team members Alli and Lea

The Environment Resource Centre recently took part in the Council's World Environment Day celebrations by promoting the showerhead exchange program, library displays and environmental resources. Exchange your showerhead for a waterwise version at Altona Library and save 13,500 litres of water a year.

Who Do You Think You Are?

Ancestry is the largest family history database in the world

Wednesday, 8th July, 10.00am - 11.00am, Newport Library

Ancestry Library edition is the largest online family history database in the world. Come to this training class and learn skills to locate relevant information for genealogy purposes. Basic Internet skills are essential and the cost is $7.50 or $5.00 concession.

Rhymetime in Newport

Rhymetime is a four week program designed especially for children aged up to 18 months. Sessions include rhymes, finger plays, songs and short stories and aim to develop young children’s listening, interactive and socialisation skills.

Get online, Computer Classes for everyone

The current series of computer training classes allow people to develop skills in the various aspects of computing, including basic computer skills, email, using the Internet and learning Excel. Regular classes are offered at beginner and intermediate level for small groups and cost only $7.50 or $5.00 concession.

Database of the Month access via Electronic Library

The Australia/NZ Reference Centre, available via the electronic library combines Australasian magazines, newspapers, newswires and reference books to create the largest collection of regional full text content available in Oceania. It includes 84,774 full text biographies and an Image Collection of 440,207 photos, maps and flags.
