Williamstown Library Redevelopment

Williamstown Library redevelopment -initial concept design

The Council has recently made an exciting announcement about the appointment of two architectural companies to design the new Williamstown Library. Sally Draper Architects and Mitsouri Architects were selected after an extensive review process.


Food for Fines

Every tin of food will clear $10 worth of fines in November 2009

The Libraries will be running a Food for Fines campaign in November.  Building on a successful program run by Geelong Regional Library Service in 2008, customers will be able to pay overdue charges with food donations instead of cash.

The History of Camping in Australia

History of Camping in Australia - bring your mug and chair.

Thursday, 17th September, 6.30pm - 8.00pm, Altona Library

Australia is a country of campers, for generations we have headed to bush and beach-side campsites in droves. Camping is now the topic of a PhD by writer Bill Garner, who has been studying this phenomenon for 10 years and camping at Johanna for longer. Campers of all ages will enjoy Bill's unique visual presentation. Bring your camping chair and mug and enjoy Cup-a-Soup and crusty bread at 6.30pm, talk commences at 7.00pm.

Book Groups

Red Couch, First Thursday Readers and Daytime Book Groups

Interested in books, literature and chatting? Check out the variety of book groups run by the libraries.

The First Thursday Readers Group will share in the world of travel narratives. Book Group will focus on A Guide to the Birds of East Africa by Nicholas Drayson and the Red Couch Book Group, which meets in a Cafe will chat about The Red Tent by Anita Diament.

Sustainable Shopping Tour, Learn a New Way to Shop

Saturday, 17th October, 11.00am - 2.00pm, Altona Library

The Ethical Consumer Group will be running a Shopping with a Conscience talk and tour. Meet at the Environment Resource Centre for a presentation about the ‘real’ cost of shopping, then stroll through the aisles of the local supermarket. Afterwards there will be a light meal using the well-chosen purchases. Cost is $5.00 with lunch, or free without.

The Friends of Altona Libraries Illustration Competition theme this year is Read It, Imagine It, Draw It! Young people from Grade Prep to Year 12, who go to school or live in Hobsons Bay are invited to pick up an entry form from any library branch or download here and be in with a chance to share in the $500 prize pool.
