Altona North Library Update

Altona North Library September 2009The building, on the corner of McArthurs and Millers Roads Altona North is really beginning to take shape. The roof has been installed and with work on schedule on site, off site decisions are being made about internal features such as shelving, furniture and IT equipment.


Children's Week Picnic

Celebrate Universal Children's Day at the Picnic

Wednesday, 28th October, 10.00am – 1.00pm, Laverton Park, Altona Meadows, (Melways 53F10)

Bring your picnic and friends, wear your hat and sunscreen and get set for a great morning at the Council's Children's Week Picnic. Enjoy the Airforce band, Kids Go For Your Life, face painting, juggling, animal farm, schools performance, jumping castles, Bendigo Bank sausage sizzle, bubbles, Bunnings craft, art off the wall, African drumming, Rockin' Russell's storytime and much more!


Food for Fines

Every tin of food will clear $10 worth of fines in November 2009The libraries' Food for Fines program will run for four weeks from mid November to assist local emergency relief agencies in the lead up to the holiday period. Food donated will assist in providing community meals and Christmas food hampers. Due to space restrictions, no food donations will be received until the campaign starts.

Peter Bakowski will launch the libraries' quarterly poetry sessions.

Wednesday, 11th November, 5.00pm - 7.00pm, Williamstown Library

Peter Bakowski, poet and author of Beneath Our Armour will launch a quarterly poetry session with a workshop of his poetry from 5.00pm. Refreshments will be served at 5.45pm with an Open Mic session at 6.00pm. Book in for the workshop and/or the Open Mic  and take two minutes to read your own poem, or one that inspires you.

Write a Novel in a Month

Write a Novel in a Month short course at Altona Meadows Library

Saturdays, 24th, 31st October, 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th November, 9.30am – 12.00pm, Altona Meadows Library and Learning Centre

National November Writing Month is an international writing competition to write 50,000 words (a novel) in a month. Participants with any level of writing experience, including first-time writers, can take part. This short course is for anyone who wants to have a go at the NaNoWriMo.

Sustainable Shopping Tour

Sustainable Shopping Tour, Learn a New Way to Shop

Saturday, 17th October, 11.00am - 2.00pm, Environment Resource Centre, Altona Library

The Ethical Consumer Group will be running a ‘Shopping with a Conscience’ talk and tour. Commencing with a presentation on principles and issues surrounding the ‘real’ cost of shopping, followed by a stroll through the aisles at the local supermarket where participants put theory to practice. Afterwards there will be a light meal using the purchases. Cost is $5.00.

Seniors Facebook classes are free!Millions of people use Facebook everyday to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about people they meet. Seniors are invited to join the millions and learn to use Facebook and other computer skills by participating in the Seniors Online classes in October.


Computer Classes

Computer Basics classes include learning to use a mouseEnter the world of computers in October, or delve further into the online world with specialist classes such as excel and ancestry. The regular classes - computer basics, introduction to email and to the Internet are on the program and all classes are run in small groups in a supportive environment.


Environment Complete Database

Environment Complete Database, via Electronic LibraryThe Environment Complete database, available via the electronic library contains more than 1,957,000 records from more than 1,700 domestic and international titles going back to the 1940s. It offers in depth coverage of energy, renewable sources and many other aspects of environmental studies.
