Victorian Bush Fire Appeal

The Friends of Williamstown and Newport Libraries' raised $850 for bushfire relief from their book sale and generous donations from the community. All proceeds are being donated to the Red Cross Bushfire appeal.

The Friends group would like to thank the community for their support.


Altona North Library Update

This is the first of regular articles which will be produced throughout 2009 about the new Altona North Library. Construction is soon to commence! Look out for the erection of the builders’ fences on the corner of Millers and Macarthurs Roads in late March.

The new library will be around 1000 square metres and will feature lots of environmental features including solar panels and double glazing. Watch this space for more news and images about the construction next month.


Writing Competition Award Winners

Friends of Williamstown and Newport Libraries' Writing Competition Winners 2009 with Cr Altair

The awards ceremony for the Friends of Williamstown and Newport Libraries’ Summer Writing Competition was held last month. Eighty five entries were received in the poetry and short story categories.  A wide variety of themes were presented, as diverse as the environment, animals, holidays and monsters.

Thanks to the Point Gellibrand Rotary Club for their sponsorship and the Friends of the Williamtown and Newport Libraries for another successful competition.

Labour Day Holiday

Hobsons Bay Libraries will be closed for the Labour Day Public Holiday on Monday, 9th March.

Williamstown Library and Altona Meadows Library and Learning Centre will be open on Sunday, 8th March and all branches will return to normal opening hours on Tuesday, 10th March.

After hours return chutes are available at all sites and customers can access the library website to search the catalogue, reserve, renew or request items online.

Spirit of Mystery

Pete Goss, Spirit of Mystery Skipper

This is Pete Goss’ next big adventure. Built in a small boatyard in Millbrook, South East Cornwall, Spirit of Mystery will take part in a 12,000 mile journey. Pete Goss and his crew will follow in the wake of the Mystery which sailed to Melbourne carrying seven heroic Cornishman in 1854 to escape poverty and seek out a new life in Australia.

The Spirit of Mystery is due to land in Williamstown in March, prepare yourself for this exciting event by reading Pete Goss’ book Close to the Wind.

Williamstown Literary Festival

Williamstown Literary Festival

This is the last call for all western region authors and poets to finalise the edits on their entry for the Ada Cambridge Prize for Biographical Short Story Writing (entries close 6th March) and for the Seagull Poetry Prize (entries close 13th March).

Learning Centre

What is the Learning Centre?

The Learning Centre is an integral aspect of the Altona Meadows Library and Learning Centre which provides spaces for learning, including meeting rooms, consulting room, multi-use art and craft room and an IT training room. The facilities are available for community and commercial groups and the library working in partnership to host learning activities.

The adventure of learning is an exciting lifelong endeavour. Our goal at the Learning Centre is to provide learners of all ages and abilities with a range of opportunities to discover new knowledge, develop new skills and to achieve personal learning goals.

What's Happening at the Learning Centre?

You’re never to old to learn and you’re never too young to see what else is out there. Have you ever thought ‘I’d love to learn something new or develop my skills’? Are you keen to learn about, well, anything at all, but can’t find a place where your interests are met?

No matter how old you are, what you do for fun, if you are stuck in the 20th century or you are way ahead of your time there is something for everyone at the Learning Centre.

Programs include, pilates, computer club, kids in the kitchen, cutting a long story short – writing workshops, write on – writers group, cooking for one, have a play with pastels, book making workshop for children, social networking – on the road to twitter and blogging, teens in the kitchen, Wednesday Words book group.

Art in Public Places

Earth Hour Exhibition Launch

Young people from across Hobsons Bay have shown their commitment to Earth Hour and created artwork to illustrate their view of what 'working together to impact climate change' means.

National Youth Week Launch
