Altona North Library

Altona North Sod Turning

The Hon. Richard Wynne MP, Minister for Local Government joined the Mayor of Hobsons Bay Councillor Peter Hemphill to turn the first sod to officially commence construction of the Altona North Library on 9th April.

The Council has allocated $4million in its capital works program to fund the development, with an additional $135,000 for environmental design from the Greenhouse Fund. The state government’s contribution will consist of a Living Libraries grant of $500,000, and $250,000 from the Community Support Fund.

The Williamstown Literary Festival prize for biographical writing is named in honour of Ada Cambridge, one of Williamstown’s most famous residents and one of Victoria’s prolific novelists, poets and diarists. Visit the exhibition of Ada Cambridge’s life and work which was recently launched by Cr Angela Altair.

is facilitated by the Australian Library and Information Association annually and this year’s theme ‘Libraries your Passport to Discovery!’ highlights the self-directed discovery element of libraries and celebrates libraries as the place to access, communicate, connect, educate, entertain and inform.

National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime at Libraries around Australia

Wednesday, 27th May, 10.30am, Altona Meadows Library and Learning Centre

The picture book Pete the Sheep, by Jackie French, will be read simultaneously at 11.00am on 27th May to more than a quarter of a million children at libraries and schools from Broome to Hobart and all around Australia! 
National Simultaneous Storytime, an initiative of the Australian Library and Information Association is aimed at promoting the value of reading and literacy.

Australia's Biggest Monring Tea at Hobsons Bay Libraries

The Friends of Altona Libraries and The Friends of Williamstown and Newport Libraries are hosting morning tea to raise funds for the Cancer Council. Come and enjoy a morning of fun and fundraising; entry is by gold coin donation.

Sorry Day: A River Dreaming

Sorry Day is celebrated the day before Reconciliation Week commences

Tuesday, 26th May, 7.00pm – 8.00pm, Williamstown Town Hall Supper Room

Join Elizabeth (Betty) Pike, an Elder and writer in residence at the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry, on 'Sorry Day'. Gain insights into reconciliation and her book A River Dreaming which is closely linked to her own story of dislocation from culture, and loss of identity. Come at 6.30pm and warm up with a Cup-a-Soup and crusty bread.

Rhymetime in May

A four week program designed especially for children from birth to 18 months. Sessions include rhymes, finger plays, songs and short stories. Rhymetime aims to develop young children’s listening and interactive skills and provides an opportunity for them to socialise.

Computer training classes allow people to develop skills in the various aspects of computing, including basic computer skills, email and using the Internet. Regular classes are offered at beginner and intermediate level for small groups and cost only $6.
