Cultural Diversity Week

Let’s Celebrate Cultural Diversity Week together! CDW2019 Core Facebook Post 1200x630px FA 21 Copy

Saturday 16 to Sunday 24 March 2019

Theme: Proud to belong – your generation, your stories

Cultural Diversity Week is celebrated in Victoria every year in March. It provides an opportunity for Victorians to come together to share aspects of their culture, faith and language, and celebrate the benefits multiculturalism brings to our state.

Data from the 2016 Census shows that just over 30 per cent (27,024 people) of the Hobsons Bay population was born overseas, with residents coming from over 130 different countries and speaking more than 100 different languages.

During Cultural Diversity Week, we celebrate Harmony Day on 21 March, to mark the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

There are a variety of wonderful events happening during this week both in our local and wider community. Pick up a program from the libraries and community centres or download the 2019 Cultural Diversity Week program here.

Hobsons Bay Libraries will host the following Cultural Diversity Week events:

Raising children in a multicultural world

When it comes to explaining Islam to children, and how we can all live together harmoniously, Amal Abou-Eid wrote the book...literally!

As the author of the picture book, My Muslim Mate and as a proud Australian mother of Lebanese heritage, Amal will be joining us for morning tea and conversation with parents and children about kindness and harmony in Australia.

Copies of Amal's book will be available for sale.

Our shared table

Kathy Tsaples, popular author of Sweet Greek and Sweet Greek life, is passionate about food celebrating life, taking traditional recipes and cooking them today to pass on to new generations.

Join Kathy for a conversation about food as our culture and spirit.

Bonjour, Ciao, Ahlan Wa Sahlan

More than 100 different languages are spoken in Hobsons Bay.

Celebrate our diverse culture with storytelling in multiple languages with English translation.

This active session will be filled craft and stories and songs in Greek, Vietnamese and Spanish.

Perfect for pre-schoolers and their families.

World storytelling day

On World Storytelling Day people gather to share stories in many languages and in many places. Hobsons Bay storytellers Matt McArthur, Dave Davies, Jackie Kerin and violinist Sarah Depasquale invite you to join them in celebrating this global day.

Come listen to a lucky-dip of tall and short stories, folk and wonder tales and possibly even some rhyming stories. Suitable for older children and adults.
