The doors may be closed but we’re still here!...

With Hobsons Bay Libraries physical branches closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s reasonable to wonder “what do librarians do without a library to open?”. You may be interested to learn that we are still running a number of key services – some have been adapted to the online environment, some running as they always have!

Over the coming days and weeks, we will continue to implement changes to some of our library offering and find new ways to best serve the Hobsons Bay community. This page will be a list of the services continuing to be offered during the branch closures and will be updated regularly.

Returns

Library return chutes are still open at all sites for those with limited space at home. However, in order to make it easier for customers to follow isolation instructions and continue enjoying library material, all items borrowed in March 2020 have been extended through to 16 May 2020. No need to speed read and no overdue charges will accrue while we are closed.

Home delivery of library items: “Book a Book”

We have commenced a home delivery service where books will be delivered to your door (contactless, of course). Find out more and register for the Home Delivery Service here.

Our existing Home Library Service continues to operate with contactless delivery and increased hygiene practices implemented. This service continues to provide reading and viewing material to more than 100 residents who are housebound or ordinarily unable to visit the library due to disability or ill health.

Library events and programs

As much as anything, modern public libraries create amazing cultural experiences and opportunities for social connection. We will continue to offer a number of programs online and are exploring more ideas at the moment. Our website and social media accounts will be the best way to find out about new online programs.

Online storytime Georgia smallEarly years programs

Stay-at-home Storytime commenced Thursday 26 March with new videos uploaded to the Hobsons Bay Libraries' YouTube channel each Tuesday and Thursday. We would love to see any reaction videos of your children watching us, photos of your home Storytime set-up, and more to continue the connection between little ones and the Librarians they know and love. When sharing on social media be sure to use the hashtag #HBLstorytime so that we can see what you and your little people get up to.

Book clubs

We have launched our first round of the Stay-at-home Book Club - a virtual book club and a social way for you to connect and engage with your fellow neighbourhood booklovers. Join as we read in April the Stella Prize-nominated 'The Weekend' by Charlotte Wood. Find out more about joining the Stay-at-home Book Club.

Our existing Books Clubs should contact us to arrange collection of their pre-allocated book sets.

Novel Saturdays - writers group

Are you (or do you want to be) a writer who is looking to put in some quality time at the keyboard over April? As our regular Novel Saturdays writing program is on hold at the moment, we are looking for ways to help readers and writers connect outside of the four walls of the library. Camp NaNoWriMo is a program where you set your own creative goal, work on any writing project…and do it with friends. If you’d like to join the Hobsons Bay Camp NaNoWriMo group – please send us an email with your username to This email address is being protected from spambots. Research assistance

Experienced Heritage Librarians continue to be available to assist with family and local history research enquiries. A shutdown might be the ideal time to get stuck into researching your family tree, or the history of your home. Requests can be submitted here: https://libraries.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/discover/hb-heritage
