The Williamstown Musical Theatre Company: celebrating 65 years

Williamstown Light Opera Company in full dress rehearsals for 'The gondoliers', 1956

The story of the Williamstown Musical Theatre Company (formally Williamstown Light Opera Company) began in 1954 with the founding of Williamstown High School’s Gilbert & Sullivan Society, who produced HMS Pinafore in December 1954 and The Pirates of Penzance in November 1955.

The success of these productions started a conversation within the community, with many believing a Light Opera Company was needed to further develop the students coming out of the High School with roles assigned to school students, ex-students and members of the community.

On the 31st March 1955, a public meeting was held for those interested in forming the Williamstown Light Opera Company. At the meeting, The Gondoliers was chosen to be the groups first production. The show went on for a three night season in April 1956, after which the company was officially born.

In 2005 the company took the opportunity to rebrand. Williamstown Musical Theatre Company Inc (WMTC) emerged and with that a new chapter began.

Preserving the Past for our Future: Our Heritage Buildings

Preserving the Past for our Future

In 1835 a small township developed to accommodate the influx of new settlers and their stock which was based around the port area of Williamstown.

It was concentrated around Nelson Place, fanning out from there as the population grew.

Organised by the Williamstown Historical Society, this exhibition will include information on many of the historic buildings still in existence along with other more contemporary buildings of social interest, accompanied by photographs showing how they looked in the past.
